«Candela» is the contemporary novel by Juan del Val, published by Booket in paperback (256 pages, in Spanish).
Candela is a waitress in her early forties who runs a neighborhood bar with her grandmother and her one-eyed mother, observing her customers with acerbic wit and an accepted loneliness. Her routine is marked by the need to illuminate the dark corners of her life, including the return of a past she thought forgotten. The novel builds the portrait of a woman who faces everyday harshness with truthfulness and often hilarious humor.
Winner of the Primavera Prize for Fiction in 2019. The book belongs to Booket's Novela collection.
For readers of contemporary Spanish fiction looking for a story with a female protagonist, humorous tone and a look at neighborhood reality.
