«Cantar de los Nibelungos» is Esther Tusquets's adaptation of the medieval epic poem, published by Lumen in paperback (112 pages, in Spanish).
This volume recreates in prose the Germanic chanson de geste that tells of Siegfried's deeds, his marriage to Princess Kriemhild, and the web of rivalries between kingdoms that leads to a tragic outcome. Tusquets's version preserves the atmosphere of medieval epic and brings it closer to today's reader. The narrative combines heroic feats, courtship, betrayal and revenge, with figures such as Brunhild, King Gunther and Hagen as pieces of the conflict.
The book belongs to the collection Masterpieces of All Time Recreated by Today's Narrators. The 1984 edition includes drawings by José Bellalta.
Esther Tusquets was a Spanish publisher, novelist and essayist.
