«Charité» is Mark Richard's collection of short stories, published by Editions Gallimard in paperback (134 pages, in French).
The stories bring together sick orphans, drunk limousine drivers and other lives on the edge in a rural and coastal America as familiar as it is unsettling. Charity barely extends to small gestures, such as letting children in a hospital watch Hitchcock's The Birds or removing stitches; alongside the misery comes the grotesque, like a contortionist found dismembered in a bay. Mark Richard thus composes a sardonic and compassionate portrait of the marginalized.
Originally published in English as Charity and translated into French by Sylvie Doizelet. It is part of Gallimard's Du monde entier collection.
For readers of contemporary short fiction seeking a singular literary voice.
