«Chicago» is the contemporary fiction novel by Alaa Al Aswany, published by Maeva Ediciones in paperback (336 pages, in Spanish).
The plot brings together on the University of Illinois campus a group of Egyptians living in Chicago: a medical student opposed to his country's regime, a young Muslim woman whose convictions waver when she falls in love, a corrupt informant, and a professor who has spent decades in the United States renouncing his origins. Through their crossings and misunderstandings, the novel portrays Egyptian society from exile and the clash between East and West.
Maeva Ediciones, 2009. Translation by Álvaro Abella. Part of the Littera collection.
Recommended for readers interested in contemporary Egyptian narrative and in stories about migration, identity, and cultural conflict.
