«Contes et Nouvelles en vers» is the collection of tales and verse novels by Jean de La Fontaine, published by Folio in paperback, in French.
La Fontaine valued these verse tales as much as the Fables. Inspired by the Decameron, Ariosto, Machiavelli and Rabelais, they celebrate physical love and forbidden pleasure. Bachelors, nuns, gossips and deceived husbands form a world of roguishness and cunning, treated with a smiling cynicism.
1982 edition edited by Alain-Marie Bassy, who also wrote the preface. Part of the Folio classique collection (no. 1404) and 576 pages.
For readers of classic French literature and narrative poetry, especially those interested in La Fontaine's satirical and licentious vein.
