When the swordsman Andrej rescues a young gypsy girl from the stake, he does not suspect that this encounter will change his life. Alessa is an immortal like him, but suffers from a mysterious disease. Shortly thereafter, Andrej must mourn her death, as he had previously assumed that beings of his kind could only die by an act of violence.
The search for the Puuri Dan, the wise woman from Alessa's tribe, from whom Andrej hopes to learn more about the girl's origins, and therefore his own, leads him and the former pirate captain Abu Dun to Bavaria. In the small village of Trentklamm, they encounter terrible creatures, only remotely similar to humans. Tragically, Andrej is injured by one of these beasts and loses his superhuman powers. With the help of the young Father Thobias, he must finally discover how closely intertwined his own origins and those of the monsters are.
