«Der Zauberer» is the novel by Ugo Riccarelli, published by Zsolnay-Verlag in hardcover (208 pages, in German).
The story unfolds between a village at the foot of the Alps, the African desert —where the father, a young soldier, falls under the spell of a Berber woman— and Italy. Its protagonist, a fascinating adventurer and trickster, connects with several generations of the family; the novel shows how each person's past weighs on the others.
The 2009 German edition is a translation by Karin Krieger of the original «Un mare di nulla».
