In 'After the Crisis,' Alain Touraine analyzes how the current crisis will impact long-term trends in our societies and what we can expect once it is overcome. He argues that the global economy and individualism have broken with the integration model of the industrial revolution, where individuals were seen as agents of an economic system. Now, we see ourselves as subjects with rights, creators of our own lives in a cultural universe. The crisis, by separating economy and society, can lead to social exclusion or an acceleration of cultural mutation. Touraine proposes rebuilding a society where the State forces economic factors to consider the repercussions of their actions and the interests of the population.

Alain Touraine was a French sociologist. He was research director at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, where he founded the Centre d'étude des mouvements sociaux. Touraine was an important figure in the founding of French sociology of work after World War II and later became a sociologist of social movements, particularly the May 68 student movement in France and the Solidarity trade-union movement in communist Poland.
