Anne Frank began this diary at thirteen, shortly before hiding with her family from the Gestapo in a secret annex in Amsterdam. During two years of seclusion, she recounts her daily life, fears, family conflicts, and reflections on the war. The testimony is interrupted when the eight refugees are arrested in August 1944.
The work was originally published in Dutch in 1947 under the title «Het Achterhuis». Anne Frank died in the Bergen-Belsen camp in March 1945.

Annelies Marie Frank was a German-born Jewish diarist and Holocaust victim. She gained worldwide notability posthumously for keeping a diary documenting her life in hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands. In the diary, she regularly described her family's everyday life in their hiding place in an Amsterdam attic from 1942 until their arrest in 1944.
