«Die Heilige Nacht» is Selma Lagerlöf's Christmas tale, illustrated by Ilon Wikland, published by Oetinger in hardcover (44 pages, in German).
The author evokes the stories her grandmother used to tell while knitting and rescues a Christmas Eve legend: a man goes out to find fire for his wife and child and meets a shepherd who at first rejects him, until the night reveals the miracle to him. It is a religious and symbolic tale, close to a parable.
The tale comes from the collection Christuslegenden, originally published in 1904. The 2005 edition uses the German translation by Marie Franzos.
Aimed at children aged 6 and up, it can also be enjoyed by the family as Christmas reading.
