La historia narra la vida de un hombre que, tras ser abandonado por su esposa, decide transformarse en otra persona para reconquistarla. A través de una prosa elegante y un humor ácido, Marsé explora temas como la identidad, el amor y las diferencias sociales en la Barcelona de finales del siglo XX. La novela fue galardonada con el Premio Ateneo de Sevilla en 1990.
