«El ascensor de los borrachos» is the humor novel by Fernando Fernán Gómez, in paperback, published by Espasa Calpe (199 pages, in Spanish).
The novel follows the Marquis de Trespasos, a ruined and forgotten aristocrat who ekes out a living in his crumbling palace on the outskirts of Madrid. Fernando Fernán Gómez combines the tragic and the comic to narrate his adventures with a very personal humor and an underlying tenderness.
The work belongs to the Espasa Humor collection, number 8, and won the Espasa-Humor Prize in 1993.
It will appeal to those looking for contemporary Spanish fiction with a tragicomic tone and an aristocratic protagonist.

Fernando Fernández Gómez, better known as Fernando Fernán Gómez, was a Spanish actor, screenwriter, film director, theater director, novelist, and playwright. Prolific in all these fields, he was elected member of the Royal Spanish Academy in 1998. He was born in Lima, Peru while his mother, Spanish actress Carola Fernán-Gómez, was making a tour in Latin America. He would later use her surname for his stage name when he moved to Spain in 1924.
