Inspector Martin Beck confronts the ghosts of his past while investigating the murder of a woman. His investigation is complicated when he crosses paths with old acquaintances: Folke Bengtsson, the main suspect, and Ake Gunnarson, a journalist who further complicates the case. Meanwhile, in Malmö, a policeman dies in a shooting, crying out for revenge. This noir novel, the ninth in the Martin Beck series, criticizes the system and abuses of power, with the characteristic irony of Sjöwall and Wahlöö.
