In early 20th century Paris, a newly rich family moves to one of the most luxurious boulevards in the city. To introduce themselves to the best of Parisian society, the lady of the house prepares a grand ball in which no detail will be missed. Upon learning of the preparations for the party, the teenage daughter begins to have illusions, but the mother, wanting no one to steal this moment of glory, forbids her from attending, unwittingly setting in motion the mechanism of a silent revenge. This is a story of revenge and adolescence, the most emblematic work of Irène Némirovsky.

Irène Némirovsky was a novelist of Ukrainian Jewish origin who was born in Kiev, then in the Russian Empire. She lived more than half her life in France and wrote in French, but was denied French nationality. Arrested as a Jew under the racial laws – which did not take into account her conversion to Roman Catholicism – she died in Auschwitz at the age of 39. Némirovsky is best known for the posthumously published Suite française.
