«El caballero de las espuelas de oro», together with «Retablo jovial», is the theater volume by Alejandro Casona published in paperback by Espasa-Calpe.
The play dramatizes the life of Francisco de Quevedo in two periods: first combative and critical of his era and, twenty years later, weary from prison and exile. «Retablo jovial» completes the volume with five short farces, including «Sancho Panza en la ínsula» and «Farsa del cornudo apaleado».
Volume of the Colección Austral, number 1358, issued as an extra volume; the work was originally published in 1965.
For readers of twentieth-century Spanish theater and those interested in the figure of Quevedo and the Generation of '27.

Alejandro Rodríguez Álvarez, known as Alejandro Casona was a Spanish poet and playwright born in Besullo, Spain, a member of the Generation of '27. Casona received his bachelor's degree in Gijon and later studied at the University of Murcia. After Franco's rise in 1936, he was forced, like many Spanish intellectuals, to leave Spain. He lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina until April 1962, when he definitively returned to Spain.
