«El gaucho Martín Fierro» and «La vuelta de Martín Fierro» are the narrative poem by José Hernández, in hardcover with slipcase (Planeta, 272 pp., Spanish).
Martín Fierro, an honest gaucho, is forcibly recruited to serve on the frontier; the injustices he suffers turn him into a hunted outlaw. The work, written in two parts, denounces the marginalization of the gaucho and reflects the harsh living conditions in nineteenth-century Argentina.
The work originally appeared in two parts, in 1872 and 1879. This 1995 edition was an exclusive print run of 4,000 copies for Banco Santander.
For readers interested in classical poetry, gaucho literature, and the Argentine literary tradition.
José Hernández was an Argentine journalist, poet, and politician best known as the author of the epic poem Martín Fierro. In his tribute, his birthday is celebrated in Argentina as a national holiday, called Tradition Day.
