«El gaucho Martín Fierro» is the Argentine narrative poem by José Hernández, published by Complutense in paperback (271 pages, in Spanish).
The poem narrates in verse the misfortunes of Martín Fierro, a gaucho trying to survive in the Argentine pampa. The second part, included in this volume, shows the protagonist's return and expands the account of his life.
The volume brings together the two parts of the poem; the first appeared in 1872 and the second, «La vuelta de Martín Fierro», in 1879.
José Hernández was an Argentine journalist, poet, and politician best known as the author of the epic poem Martín Fierro. In his tribute, his birthday is celebrated in Argentina as a national holiday, called Tradition Day.
