«El rei Carnestoltes» is the children's story by Núria Font i Ferré, published by Editorial Cruïlla in paperback (16 pages, in Catalan).
In a faraway country many misfortunes occur and everyone attributes them to their despotic king, so they replace him with a just ruler. To celebrate the change and the end of the troubles, every year people dress up, sing and dance for a week, and end up burning a straw dummy dressed as a king on a bonfire, which they call «el rei Carnestoltes». The tale simply recreates the origin of the carnival festival.
It belongs to the collection «Vull llegir!», a series of folk tales with texts adapted for early readers. The illustrations are by Àngels Ruiz Aguado.
Suitable for children from 3 years old, especially recommended for those starting to read in Catalan.
