«El Romancero viejo» is the anthology of traditional romances edited by Mercedes Díaz Roig, published by Ediciones Cátedra in paperback (352 pages, in Spanish).
Transmitted orally for generations, romances are brief epic and lyric poems whose origins trace back to ancient cantares de gesta. This anthology, prepared by Mercedes Díaz Roig, brings together a representative sample of the Romancero viejo and positions its written redaction as key to its preservation throughout the Hispanic world and its influence on later poetry.
This edition belongs to the Letras Hispánicas collection, number 52, and includes an introductory study and notes by the editor.
Recommended for students of Spanish literature and readers interested in medieval poetry and the romance.
