«Goodbye, España» is the historical novel by Mercedes Salisachs, published by Ediciones Martínez Roca in hardcover (352 pages, in Spanish).
In February 1968, Victoria Eugenia of Battenberg returns to Spain after 37 years of exile to attend the baptism of her great-grandson, Prince Felipe. During five days in Madrid, the queen recalls her life with Alfonso XIII: the assassination attempt by Mateo Morral on her wedding day, palace intrigues, the king's infidelities and the family's departure from the country when the Republic was proclaimed. The novel alternates her devotion and help to the most disadvantaged with the shadows that surrounded her, such as her alleged romance with the Duke of Lécera or the accusation of espionage during World War II.
Winner of the Alfonso X the Wise Historical Novel Prize 2009. Part of the MR Historical Novel collection (volume 1).
Recommended for readers of historical fiction interested in the Spanish monarchy and in fictionalized biographies of prominent twentieth-century women.
