«El viaje de Mina» is the coming-of-age novel by writer Michael Ondaatje, published by Alfaguara in paperback (288 pages, in Spanish).
In the early 1950s, an eleven-year-old boy nicknamed Mina crosses the ocean on a transatlantic liner from Colombo to England. At the «cat's table» he shares the voyage with an eccentric group of passengers and two young friends; at night they observe a chained prisoner, and Mina discovers desire alongside the enigmatic Emily. The story then jumps to the protagonists' adult lives and contrasts the magic of childhood with the melancholy of knowledge.
The novel was originally published in 2011 as «The Cat's Table» and translated into Spanish by José Luis López Muñoz. The book belongs to Alfaguara's Literaturas collection.
Recommended for readers of contemporary literary fiction and coming-of-age novels, as well as for those familiar with the work of Michael Ondaatje, author of «El paciente inglés».
