In 'At Weddings and Wakes', Alice McDermott presents an unforgettable portrait of the life of a New York family of Irish origin during the sixties. Through the eyes of Lucy Towne's three children, we witness the family rituals that mark their lives: weddings, funerals, and Christmas meals. The lives of the four women in the family revolve around the imposing figure of Mama Towne, the stepmother who raised them and who seems to have instilled in them a special ability for dissatisfaction and irresolution. This initiation novel shows us how the young protagonists discover that living is constantly dialoguing with family demons.
