«Football» is Jean-Philippe Toussaint's essay on soccer, published by Les Éditions de Minuit in paperback (122 pages, in French).
Toussaint recalls his childhood in Belgium and his passion for soccer, and reflects on what that passion has taught him about time. He travels through the World Cups in Japan, Germany, South Africa and Brazil, and asks how soccer sustains and transcends nationalism. Memory, travel and philosophical essay combine to capture ephemeral beauty.
