Discover the heartwarming story of Frederick, a field mouse who, unlike his companions, does not gather provisions for the winter. Instead, Frederick stores in his memory the colors, sunbeams, and words that will warm the hearts of his friends during the cold days. This tale by Leo Lionni, awarded the Caldecott Honor, is an ode to the importance of art and poetry, and how they nurture the spirit in times of need. Ideal for children who are beginning to read independently, 'Frederick' is a valuable addition to the 'Step into Reading' collection.

Leo Lionni was an American writer and illustrator of children's books. Born in the Netherlands, he moved to Italy and lived there before moving to the United States in 1939, where he worked as an art director for several advertising agencies, and then for Fortune magazine. He returned to Italy in 1962 and started writing and illustrating children's books. In 1962, his book Inch by Inch was awarded the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award.
