«Histoire de la Provence» is the historical essay by Maurice Agulhon and Noël Coulet, published by PUF in paperback (128 pages, in French).
The work surveys the history of Provence, between the Rhône, the Durance, the Var and the Mediterranean, from its emergence as a county in the 12th century to today. Agulhon and Coulet describe the region's changes of name and borders and contrast the historical Provence of King René with the official one and with that evoked by followers of Frédéric Mistral.
The book belongs to the Que sais-je? collection (no. 149), in its fifth edition; it was originally published in 1944.
For readers interested in French regional history and the evolution of Provençal identity.

Maurice Agulhon was a French historian, specializing in the contemporary history of France of the 19th and 20th centuries, and professor at the Collège de France from 1986 to 1997. Although his early work focused on the Révolution of 1848 in Provence, Maurice Agulhon went on to become one of the leading specialists on the institutions of the French Republic and the symbolism of republican power. He was also politically committed to the left, initially with the French Communist Party.
