«História de uma Gaivota e do Gato que a Ensinou a Voar» is the young-adult novel by Luis Sepúlveda, published by Asa in paperback (121 pages, in Portuguese).
Zorbas, a cat from the port of Hamburg, promises a dying seagull —trapped in an oil slick— to care for her egg and raise the chick. With the help of his feline friends, he will keep his word and take on the absurd task of teaching a baby seagull to fly.
Portuguese translation by Pedro Tamen; the Spanish original, «Historia de una gaviota y del gato que le enseñó a volar», dates from 1996.
Aimed at young and adult readers; a fable about keeping one's word, friendship, and the relationship between species.

Luis Sepúlveda Calfucura was a Chilean writer and journalist. A communist militant and fervent opponent of Augusto Pinochet's regime, he was imprisoned and tortured by the military dictatorship during the 1970s. Sepúlveda authored numerous poetry books and short stories; in addition to Spanish, his mother tongue, he also spoke English, the language in which he wrote his first novel, El viejo que leía novelas de amor.
