«Impératrice» is the historical novel by Shan Sa, published by Le Livre de Poche in paperback (440 pages, in French).
Born during the Tang dynasty, the protagonist enters the imperial harem and, amid murders, plots and betrayals, reaches the throne of China. Her reign brings Chinese civilization to its peak, but official history ends up condemning her memory for having dared to rule as empress.
Originally published by Albin Michel in 2003, the work won the Prix des lecteurs du Livre de Poche in 2005.
Work aimed at readers of historical fiction, with particular interest in the Chinese empire and biographies of powerful women.

Shan Sa is the pseudonym of Yan Ni, a French author and painter. The Girl Who Played Go was the first of her novels to be published outside France, and won the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens. Her second novel to appear in English translation was Empress (2006). She was awarded chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in July 2009 and chevalier of the Ordre national du Mérite in May 2011.
