In 'Empire: The forging of Spain as a world power', Henry Kamen explores how Spain, a small and isolated country, became the first world superpower. Through accounts of direct witnesses, Kamen recreates the Spanish imperial expansion from the conquest of Granada and the first voyage of Columbus to its reach in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, reaching territories such as Texas and California in the 18th century. The author analyzes the collaboration of international business interests, including Italian financiers, German technicians and Dutch merchants, which made the Spanish empire possible. This book offers a global vision of the diversity of resources and people who contributed to the power of Spain, challenging traditional conceptions of the empire.
