In the Madrid of 1940, in the midst of the post-war period and with Europe under Nazi rule, the city has become a hotbed of spies. Harry Brett, a former English soldier who fought in the Spanish Civil War, works for the British Secret Service and must gain the trust of his former comrade Sandy Forsyth to uncover his shady dealings. At the same time, Barbara Clare, Sandy's girlfriend and former Red Cross nurse, is looking for her former lover, Bernie Piper, a communist volunteer who disappeared after the Battle of Jarama. A novel of spies and love in times of war, where choosing the right path is a difficult task.
