«J'ai entendu le savant astronome» is the illustrated album by Walt Whitman, published by Gallimard Jeunesse in hardcover (32 pages, in French).
This album recreates the poem «When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer» by Walt Whitman: a child attends a lecture by an astronomer and, seized by a strange dizziness, leaves the room. Alone in the night, in silence, he raises his eyes to the stars under the open sky.
With illustrations by Loren Long and a translation by Anne Krief, it was published on October 12, 2006 in the Albums Gallimard Jeunesse collection.
Aimed at young children, it serves as a first introduction to poetry and to observing the night sky.

Walter Whitman Jr. was an American poet, essayist, and journalist; he also wrote two novels. He is considered one of the most influential poets in American literature and world literature. Whitman incorporated both transcendentalism and realism in his writings and is often called the father of free verse. His work was controversial in his time, particularly his 1855 poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described by some as obscene for its overt sensuality.
