«Juana de Arco. El corazón del verdugo» is the historical novel by María Elena Cruz Varela published in hardcover by Ediciones Martínez Roca.
Twenty-one years after the stake, the Church orders the trial against Joan of Arc to be reopened. The manuscripts of vice-inquisitor Jean Le Maistre reveal the machinations of the Bishop of Beauvais. Amid murders, persecutions and tortures, the plot intersects with the story of a present-day couple and proposes a new reading of the Maid of Orleans.
Winner of the Alfonso X El Sabio Historical Novel Prize 2003. It is the first title in the MR Novela Histórica collection. 292 pages.
