«König Hänschen I.» is Janusz Korczak's children's novel, published by dtv Verlag in paperback (321 pages, in German).
When he becomes an orphan, Hänschen becomes king and leaves behind the label of a spoiled child to rule by his own rules; when war breaks out, he goes to the front with his friend Felka and, on his return, pushes reforms such as a children's parliament, though his idealism clashes with a vulnerable kingdom.
Original Polish title: «Król Maciuś Pierwszy». It is the first part of the «Król Maciuś» series; this German edition was published in 1974 and the original work dates from 1923.
Aimed at child and young readers, it also appeals to adults interested in classics of Polish literature.

Janusz Korczak, the pen name of Henryk Goldszmit, was a Polish Jewish pediatrician, educator, children's author and pedagogue known as Pan Doktor or Stary Doktor. He was an early children's rights advocate, in 1919 drafting a children's constitution.
