Everything begins with a wheelchair, immersed in the darkness on the deserted sidewalk of a Barcelona alley. Francisco Balmes, known as Paquito, a jewelry salesman, has the misfortune of passing by and catching the gaze of the man in that chair: an invalid who is still well-built, with muscular arms, a bull-like neck, and an air of ancient sadness. Like a nun of charity, Paquito helps the man cross the street. Everything falls apart in a few moments: in the darkest part of the alley, the invalid stands up. No more wheelchair, no more failing legs. Only the muscular arms, the bull-like neck, the evil gaze. Placing a knife blade to his throat, the man orders him to give him everything. Paquito hands over his wallet, tie clip, a ring, everything he owns... except for a ruby, large and red like a last tear of Christ, which he wears on his left hand. To defend that ruby, Paquito dies: a clean cut to the Adam's apple. Following the trail of that jewel, the story unfolds into an investigation filled with a series of inexplicable murders.
