«La Mamelouka» is the historical novel by Robert Solé, published by Seuil in paperback (345 pages, in French).
Dora, wife of Émile Touta, discovers photography in her husband's portrait studio in Egypt at the end of the 19th century. Her talent takes her to Cairo's high society; with nationalism on the rise under British occupation, she travels to Khartoum to cover the conquest of Sudan and reconcile her vocation with the conventions of her era.
The novel was originally published in 1996 in Seuil's Cadre Rouge collection and is classified in the Library of Congress as PQ3989.2.S62 M36 1996.
