«La materinatat d'Elna» is the historical non-fiction work by Assumpta Montellà, published by Ara Llibres in hardcover (176 pages, in Catalan).
Between 1939 and 1944, the Swiss Elisabeth Eidenbenz promoted a maternity home in Elna where 597 children were cared for, sons and daughters of Spanish Republican women exiled in the camps of Argelers, Sant Cebrià and Ribesaltes. The book reconstructs the episode with testimonies from mothers and from some of those children, now adults, and reflects the harsh conditions of the camps and the humanitarian work that saved lives.
Second edition, published on July 1, 2008. The work originally appeared in 2005 under the title «La maternitat d'Elna: bressol dels exiliats».
For readers interested in the historical memory of the Republican exile, in the history of women and in humanitarian aid during World War II.
