«La maternitat d'Elna en imatges» is the photographic album by Assumpta Montellà i Carlos, published by Ara Llibres in hardcover (186 pages, in Catalan).
Between 1939 and 1944, Swiss teacher Elisabeth Eidenbenz set up a maternity home next to the refugee camps in southern France and saved the lives of 597 newborns, children of Republican exiles living in dire conditions. This album brings together photographs of that experience, with testimonies from the women and children who were taken in.
Published on November 20, 2008; it has had film and theater versions, 15,000 copies in Catalan, translations into Spanish and Chinese, and more than seventy girls named Elna.
For readers interested in historical memory, the Republican exile and the Spanish Civil War.
