«La Promesse» is the novel by South African writer Damon Galgut, published by Points in paperback (288 pages, in French).
The novel begins in 1986 in Pretoria: the matriarch of the Swart family, Rachel, promises on her deathbed to leave her house to Salomé, her Black employee. The fulfilment of that promise hangs over the clan for decades, unearthing resentments, silences and racial tensions. Through the decline of a Protestant family, Galgut paints a portrait of South Africa and of an unfulfilled promise.
Originally published in English as The Promise; this French edition, translated by Hélène Papot, was published in the Grands Romans collection. The novel won the 2021 Booker Prize.
