«La Pyramide» is the satirical novel by Albanian writer Ismaïl Kadaré, published by LGF/Le Livre de Poche in paperback (158 pages, in French).
In ancient Egypt, the young pharaoh Keops announces he will not build a pyramid, and ministers and priests see the established power in danger. The work portrays with irony how the colossal funerary monument ends up devouring the people, fattening the bureaucracy and subjecting individuals to the State.
Originally published in 1992; this French edition is from 1994. Translated from Albanian by Jusuf Vrioni, with a presentation by Éric Faye. Nominated for the Grinzane Cavour Prize in 1998.
Readers of historical fiction and political satire will find here a critique of totalitarianism set in ancient Egypt.

Ismail Kadare was an Albanian novelist, poet, essayist, screenwriter and playwright. He was a leading international literary figure and intellectual, focusing on poetry until the publication of his first novel, The General of the Dead Army, which made him famous internationally.
