«La sirena varada / Los árboles mueren de pie» is the theater volume by Alejandro Casona that brings together two plays, published by Espasa-Calpe in the Austral Collection in paperback (150 pages, in Spanish).
The volume brings together two dramatic works by Alejandro Casona. «La sirena varada» presents characters seeking to escape monotony by taking refuge in a world of fantasy, while «Los árboles mueren de pie» poses the conflict between reality and well-intentioned fiction. Both plays explore the tension between the real and the imaginary and propose that human fulfillment requires harmonizing both dimensions.
The edition belongs to the Austral Collection, where the volume bears number 1601. The publication took place in Madrid in 1980; the copy corresponds to the fourth edition, with a study by Carmen Díaz Castañón.
Aimed at readers of twentieth-century Spanish classical theater and literature students who want to approach two representative titles of Casona's dramaturgy.

Alejandro Rodríguez Álvarez, known as Alejandro Casona was a Spanish poet and playwright born in Besullo, Spain, a member of the Generation of '27. Casona received his bachelor's degree in Gijon and later studied at the University of Murcia. After Franco's rise in 1936, he was forced, like many Spanish intellectuals, to leave Spain. He lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina until April 1962, when he definitively returned to Spain.
