«La sirena varada / Los árboles mueren de pie» is a theater volume by Alejandro Casona, published by Austral in paperback (208 pages, in Spanish).
A volume bringing together two key plays by Alejandro Casona. In «La sirena varada», reality merges with fantasy and the dreamlike; «Los árboles mueren de pie» raises the value of illusion and hope as transformative forces. Together they sum up his idea that neither bare reality nor escapism suffice to achieve human fulfillment.
The edition includes a reading guide by Carmen Díaz Castañón and belongs to the Contemporánea collection. «La sirena varada» won the Premio Lope de Vega in 1934.
For readers of 20th-century Spanish theater, particularly the dramaturgy of Alejandro Casona.

Alejandro Rodríguez Álvarez, known as Alejandro Casona was a Spanish poet and playwright born in Besullo, Spain, a member of the Generation of '27. Casona received his bachelor's degree in Gijon and later studied at the University of Murcia. After Franco's rise in 1936, he was forced, like many Spanish intellectuals, to leave Spain. He lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina until April 1962, when he definitively returned to Spain.
