«La tierra pura» is the historical novel by Alan Spence, published by Punto de Lectura in hardcover (560 pages, in Spanish).
In 1858, Thomas Glover, a young Scot, arrives in Japan as a merchant and within a decade amasses a fortune, becomes familiar with the samurai code, and takes part in the fall of the shogunate. His love story with a courtesan would inspire the opera Madame Butterfly. The novel follows his rise and decline, in a saga that culminates with the destruction of Nagasaki in 1945.
Original title: «The Pure Land» (1996). The hardcover edition includes a text by the author about the novel.
For readers of historical fiction interested in nineteenth-century Japan and its transformations.

Alan Spence is a Scottish writer and is Professor in Creative Writing at the University of Aberdeen, where he is also artistic director of the annual WORD Festival. He was born in Glasgow, educated at Allan Glen's School there, and much of his work is set in the city.
