«La vita è altrove» is the novel by Milan Kundera, published by Adelphi in 1992 in paperback (349 pages, in Italian).
The novel follows Jaromil, a young poet whose mother imagines him as an almost divine being and envelops him in an absorbing devotion. Between sentimental education, lyrical vocation and his commitment to revolution, Kundera examines youth as the «lyrical age», innocence and its dark zones, and the unsettling proximity between poetry, denunciation and power.
Originally published as «Život je jinde» in 1973, the novel received the Prix Médicis étranger. This Italian edition, with a translation by Serena Vitale, belongs to the Gli Adelphi collection.
For readers of European literary fiction seeking a novel with philosophical, political and historical depth.

Milan Kundera was a Czech and French novelist. Kundera went into exile in France in 1975, acquiring citizenship in 1981. His Czechoslovak citizenship was revoked in 1979, but he was granted Czech citizenship in 2019.
