«La zanja» is the novel by Alfonso Grosso, published in 1982 by Destino in hardcover (230 pages, in Spanish).
Workers dig a trench next to a US military base; from there, Grosso contrasts their lives with those of the American soldiers. The novel shows multiple aspects of life in an Andalusian town with a fragmented structure and a critical, denunciatory view of the Spanish reality of the time, without picturesque touches.
It belongs to the Destinolibro collection, number 178. The work was originally published in March 1961.
For readers of contemporary Spanish fiction and socially committed novels.
