The Good Soldier Švejk is a novel by Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek, published in 1923. The work narrates the adventures of Josef Švejk, a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I. Švejk is a peculiar character, an official idiot who, with his naivety and his particular way of seeing the world, criticizes the futility and meaninglessness of war. Jaroslav Hašek was a Czech writer, humorist, satirist, journalist, bohemian, first anarchist and then communist, and commissar of the Red Army against the Czechoslovak Legion. He is best known for his novel The Fateful Adventures of the Good Soldier Švejk During the World War, an unfinished novel about a soldier in World War I and a satire on the ineptitude of authority figures. The novel has been translated into about 60 languages, making it the most translated novel in Czech literature.
