«Las cadenas de Sultana» is the novel by Jean Sasson, published by Círculo de Lectores in hardcover (231 pages, in Spanish).
Sultana, princess of the Saudi royal house, faces the void left by her grown children. One of her daughters embraces religious fundamentalism and censures her behavior, while Sultana seeks refuge in alcohol, forbidden in Islamic countries. The work denounces how that society humiliates and enslaves women and limits their freedom.
Third installment of the Sultana saga, after «Sultana» and «Las hijas de Sultana». Translated by Luis Murillo Fort; original title: «Princess Sultana's Circle». Published in 1999.
For readers interested in gender studies, the situation of women in the Middle East and social criticism.
