«Mayada: Daughter of Iraq» is Jean Sasson's biography of Mayada Al-Askari, published by Transworld Publishers in paperback (416 pages, in English).
Mayada, a divorced woman and mother of two in Baghdad, is arrested in 1999 and imprisoned in Baladiyat prison on false charges of printing propaganda against Saddam Hussein. In the cell she shares captivity with seventeen «shadow women», who tell each other their stories while awaiting interrogations and torture; the account combines her experience with testimony of the regime's repression of ordinary citizens.
The book is part of Jean Sasson's series of interviews and chronicles about the lives of women in the Middle East, which includes her well-known work «Princess». The paperback edition was published by Transworld Publishers in 2004.
Jean P. Sasson is an American writer whose work mainly centers around women in the Middle East.
