In this classic comedy of errors, Silvia decides to swap identities with her maid, Lisette, to judge the quality of her fiancé, Dorante. Unbeknownst to her, Dorante has made the same decision, swapping places with his servant, Arlequin. This witty game of appearances and intellect, characteristic of Marivaux's style, explores how truth and love ultimately triumph over social conventions. This work is a fundamental piece of 18th-century French literature, offering a brilliant analysis of human relationships and courtship through sharp dialogue and comedic situations.
