On an island in southern Sweden in the 10th century, a man lives alone on the farm with his two sons. Their path is all mapped out: to sail far away, to wage war beyond the seas to the west or to trade on the waterways to the east. On the other side of the Baltic Sea, in Kiev, live a silk merchant and his family. Radoslav dreams of becoming a soldier, his sister Milka is a refined young girl who plays with her two slaves: Petite Marmite with dark skin and Poisson d'Or with slanted eyes. When the beautiful city of the Orient falls into the hands of looters, Milka and Radoslav find refuge with rough sailors from the North. From then on, the destiny of the two families is forever intertwined. To write this historical novel full of suspense, adventure, magic, revenge and love, Katarina Mazetti has relied on solid documentation. Mixing the frank humor that we know her for with a taste for poetry and legend that we discover in her, she succeeds in an enthusiastic variation on the clash of cultures.
