«Les Surprises du Petit Nicolas» is the children's book by Jean-Jacques Sempé and René Goscinny, in paperback (160 pages, in French).
Nicolas celebrates his father's promotion with his family at a restaurant, makes faces at a llama in the zoo with Alceste, has a snack with his unbearable cousin Éloi and admires the illuminated store windows of the department stores. His daily life is full of surprises, but the biggest one comes when he repeats at home a swear word he heard Eudes say at recess.
Fifth volume in the series «Les histoires inédites du Petit Nicolas», within the Le Petit Nicolas saga, published by Gallimard Jeunesse in the Folio Junior collection.
Recommended for readers aged 8 to 11, as well as for those who want to discover Goscinny and Sempé's children's classics in French.
Jean-Jacques Sempé, usually known as Sempé, was a French cartoonist. He is known for the series of children's books he created with René Goscinny, Le Petit Nicolas, and also for his poster-like illustrations, usually drawn from a distant or high viewpoint depicting detailed countrysides or cities. For decades, he created covers for The New Yorker.
