When diagnosed with a serious illness, Dr. Prendel feels the need to confess a secret he has lived with but cannot die with. He tells his story to his lover, making her promise to make it public after his death. Victim of a pirate attack, Prendel had been shipwrecked in the middle of the Atlantic and had disappeared for five years from his circle in New York. Upon his return, he had not wanted to say a single word about that experience. After hearing the story, his lover recounts it in a narrative impossible to forget.
